History of the Maltese women in Tunisia

In Tunisia, citrus fruits were introduced by Andalusians (Moriscos) driven from Spain at the beginning of the 17th century. This wave of immigrants, composed of craftsmen and agricultural workers, settle in Tunisia and receive among others land grants ... They introduce new agricultural tools, new work procedures and even new species.

The current inhabitants of Cap-Bon are the worthy descendants of these Moriscan gardeners who have perpetuated their agricultural traditions.

This region is traditionally a region of intensive market gardening and fruit growing.

It concentrates the vast majority of orange groves on an area of 14,000 ha, 45% of which is devoted to the production of Maltese (Malti), the queen of oranges. But the sweet meski, the chami or the fleshy and slightly acidic thomson are also grown.

And in March April, after the harvest, it is in Hammamet in Nabeul in Beni Khaled or in Menzel Bouzelfa ... that the orange festivals are in full swing.

Tunisia is the only world producer and exporter of half-blood Maltese.
